Venkatesh Sharma

Venkatesh Sharma is a Karnatic - Hindustani Jugalbandhi Vocalist. He took to Karnatic Music at an early age. His musical lessons began with Vid. T.R. Sreenivasan of Mysore and he continued with Smt. Muttu Meenakshi of Chennai and his music took a precise shape under the able guidance of Sangeetha Kalaratna Vidushi. Neela Ramgopal of Bangalore.

He is greatly influenced by Ustad Dilshad Khan of Mumbai and picked up the art of Khayal Singing in Hindustani Classical music and now he is equipped with the knowledge of both music systems and emerged as one of the very few jugalbandhi vocalists of the country.

He produced and presented a programme “RAAGINI NEE BAHURUPINI” for Doordarshan Bangalore. This was telecast by Bangalore Doordarshan Chandana for about 4 months on Sundays. This was appreciated by all music lovers from the Pandits to the general listeners. In this programme several classical raagas were presented in Karnatic, Hindustani, Yakshagaana, Film songs, Bhavageethe and Womens traditional songs to give a complete picture of raga.

He has developed one new raga in Karnatic music namely AMRUTADHAWANI & another new raga in Hindustani namely GOWRISHANKARA.

Karnatic music, known as Karnāṭaka saṃgīta in the South Indian languages, is a system of music commonly associated with South India, including the modern Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and Sri Lanka. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music. The other subgenre being Hindustani music, which emerged as a distinct form because of Persian or Islamic influences from Northern India. The main emphasis in Karnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gāyaki (singing) style. The heptatonic scale of Western musical notation is said to have its origins in Karnatic music, having been picked up by Pythagoras during his visit to India to learn mathematics, thus introducing it to the west.
Karnatic Music

Hindustani classical music is the classical music of northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. It may also be called North Indian classical music or, in Hindustani, Shastriya Sangeet (sastriya sangit). Its origins date from the 12th century CE, when it diverged from Karnatic music, the classical tradition of southern regions of the Indian subcontinent. Until the late 19th century, Hindustani classical music was imparted on a one-on-one basis through the guru-shishya ("mentor-protégé") tradition. This system had many benefits, but also several drawbacks; In many cases, the shishya had to spend most of his time serving his guru with a hope that the guru might teach him a "cheez" (piece or nuance) or two. In addition, the system forced the music to be limited to a small subsection of the Indian community. To a large extent, it was limited to the palaces and dance halls.
Hindustani Music

One may wonder what is this Jugalbandhi Music or Jugalbandhi Vocalist. In the context of Indian music, Juagalbandhi denotes the two classical music systems namely Karnatic and Hindustani. Whenever music Sabhas or Organisations notify a concert as Jugalbhandhi concert, it then means one or more artists from two music systems performing together. The word jugalbandhi means, literally, "entwined twins." The duet can be either vocal or instrumental. Often, the musicians will play different instruments, as for example the famous duets between sitarist Ravi Shankar and sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, who played the format since the 1940s. More rarely, the musicians (either vocalists or instrumentalists) may be from different traditions (i.e. Karnatic and Hindustani). In jugalbandhi, both musicians act as lead players, and a playful competition exists between the two performers.
